Academic Excellence in relation to Spirituality

"In our church, we believe that academic excellence and spirituality are synonymous. Something is amiss if a student is on fire for Jesus, committed to church, yet doing badly in school. In fact, we teach that academic excellence and spirituality are proportionate. In other words, the more spiritual you are, the better you should be as a student. Excelling in church is a great testimony to Christians, but excelling in studies is an even greater testimony to the world. That is why in our church, youths must attain a minimum academic standard before they can serve in ministry or leadership. Our leaders need to obtain an L1R5 of 20 or below, while our youths need to have an L1R5 of 25 before they can serve in ministry. Students are also required to fulfill 20 hours of effective studying time each week. If they do not complete this study rule, they will not be allowed to attend services."

hey guys. just a quick email that i've received and thought you might be blessed by it too (:

When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better.
Concentrate on this sentence...

'The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.'

Some years ago, on a hot summer day in south Florida , a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore.
His father working in the yard saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, he ran toward the water, yelling to his son as loudly as he could.

Hearing his voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his father. It was t oo late. Just as he reached his father, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the father grabbed his little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the father, but the father was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard his screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches where his father's fingernails dug into his flesh in his effort to hang on to the son he loved.

The newspaper reporter who interviewed the boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, 'But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Dad wouldn't let go.'

You and I can identify with that little boy. We have scars, too. No, not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friend, are because God has refused to let go. In the midst of your struggle, He's been there holding on to you.

The Scripture teaches that God loves you. You are a child of God He wants to protect you and provide for you in every way But sometimes we foolishly wade into dangerous situations, not knowing what lies ahead. The swimming hole of life is filled with peril - and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack. That's when the tug-of-war begins - and if you have the scars of His love on your arms, be very, very grateful. He did not and will not ever let you go.

just got an email from a friend,
probably one that's been in circulation for quite some time already since its pretty familiar to me too, but decided to post it anyway (:

17-year-old Brian Moore had only a short time to write something for a class. The subject was what Heaven was like. 'I wowed 'em,' he later told his father, Bruce. 'It's a killer. It's the bomb. It's the best thing I ever wrote..' It also was the last.

Brian Moore died May 27, 1997, the day after Memorial Day. He was driving home from a friend's house when his car went off Bulen-Pierce Road in Pickaway County and struck a utility pole. He emerged from the wreck unharmed but stepped on a downed power line and was electrocuted.

The Moores framed a copy of Brian's essay and hung it among the family portraits in the living room. 'I think God used him to make a point. I think we were meant to find it and make something out of it,' Mrs. Moore said of the essay. She and her husband want to share their son's vision of life after death. 'I'm happy for Brian. I know he's in heaven. I know I'll see him.'

Brian's Essay: The Room...
In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features except for the one wall covered with small index card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read 'Girls I have liked.' I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one. And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was.

This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match. A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching.

A file named 'Friends' was next to one marked 'Friends I have betrayed.' The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird 'Books I Have Read,' 'Lies I Have Told,' 'Comfort I have Given,' 'Jokes I Have Laughed at .' Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: 'Things I've yelled at my brothers.' Others I couldn't laugh at: 'Things I Have Done in My Anger', 'Things I Have Muttered Under My Breath at My Parents.' I never ceased to be surprised by the contents.

Often there were many more cards than I expected. Sometimes fewer than I hoped. I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived. Could it be possible that I had the time in my years to fill each of these thousands or even millions of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.

When I pulled out the file marked 'TV Shows I have watched', I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn't found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of shows but more by the vast time I knew that file represented.

When I came to a file marked 'Lustful Thoughts,' I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed content.

I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded. An almost animal rage broke on me. One thought dominated my mind: No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!' In insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn't matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took it at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.

Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh.

And then I saw it.. The title bore 'People I Have Shared the Gospel With.' The handle was brighter than those around it,seemed newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.

And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that they hurt. They started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key. But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him.

No, please not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus. I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn't bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own.

He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one? Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn't say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card. 'No!' I shouted rushing to Him. All I could find to say was 'No, no,' as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood. He gently took the card back. He smiled a sad smile and began to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side.

He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, 'It is finished.' I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written.

my apologies for the lack of posts for quite some time. :(

well fret not, i return with a TREAT FOR YOUR EYES:

hello people!
just a reminder that tomorrow's service is at the NTU Alumni Club due to 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS! so please do not turn up at church =) if you do you can join sunday school maybe.

in case some of you don't already know because you weren't around last night at prayer meeting (like yao who was more than three hours late, none of us knew what time he finally turned up) or if you were there or were not paying attention (like maybe chris since he was happily chatting with zz), the splashers are at table 16 for the lunch tomorrow. yes, and we have three very special guests at our table too so thumbs up for 1. (drumroll please) uncle alvin; 2. fengming ming ming! and 3. (ahem) willy lim wei li the awol. how very exciting ;)

and finally, do remember to be in formal attire (guys-shirt and tie; girls-skirt/dress) since its a BIG event. so put on your more-than-Sunday-best please unless you'd like to join the kids in the oven HEHE (SHH! its gracey, chris and serah's secret plan!)

if you don't have tie, Elder Soon will gladly lend one to you (he's lending a black one to chris i think) and he has a whole selection you can choose from including a navy blue one with a very adorable mouse on it and one with the Lord's Prayer printed on it so you can refer to it should you have a sudden strange urge to say the Lord's Prayer but have forgotten the words. yes.

and and do let's come with a heart of THANKSGIVING to our heavenly Father for His abundant blessings these ten years! =)

offering up thanksgiving and praise to Him!
-thanksgiving and praise -> a gift from God; a weapon
-an order. what we are supposed to do. if we do what we are supposed to do, we will get the blessings we are supposed to receive.

we must know that He is OUR God and that He has done great things for US. only when we know that can we truly thank and praise Him from the bottom of our hearts! (:

we have to LEARN/be taught to give thanks.

we need to change our complaints & grumbles into praise & thanks!
and never stop thanking and praising God in all that we do!

we believe in our Lord not because we are afraid but because He loves us and we love Him =)

*Job! even though he had so much to face, he never complained but praised God and eventually, God blessed him abundantly.

our God is a good God.
His love and faithfulness endures forever!

1 Thes 5:16-18
being joyful is a choice.
give thanks in ALL circumstances regardless of how we may feel or how bad the situation is.
v19: the spirit's fire.
if we do not have a thankful heart, it is very hard for us to have the fire of the spirit.

Jesus always gave thanks in all circumstances.
before He performed any miracle, He would give thanks.
giving thanks aligns our vision so we fix our eyes on God and not on ourselves.

when we give thanks, we will see God's will and work in whatever situation we are facing.

even though they were in jail, they still gave thanks and praised God.
(point to note: their prison in those days is definitely not like Singapore's present day prison. i'm sure you get the point.)
even in the most difficult times, we still need to give thanks!
and in Paul and Silas's case, we see how thanksgiving is a weapon as it caused the earthquake that opened the prison doors and loosened their chains.

when we do not give thanks, our thinking becomes futile and our hearts darkened.
but when we do give thanks, God refreshes us and adds to us joy and strength!

Desiring God's Presence
-life of David: he had a hunger for God
a 'man after God's own heart'.

Isaiah 55: 1
-being thirsty is actually a good thing.
-> relates to our busy lives ;)
when we get too busy, we often forget to or are not willing to eat or drink. it is our hunger/thirst that drives us to eat and drink.
thus having a thirst and hunger for God will likewise make us draw near to Him and desire His presence =)
-do we have a lack of appetite for God's Word? ;)

-to acknowledge that we need to be hungry.
coming before the Lord and telling Him that we need Him and that we need and we want to be hungry for Him.
the more we realise we need God, the more we will treasure Him!

-desperation.
desperately asking Him to put in us that thirst for Him.

-discipline.
discipline-> thirst -> joy
God wants us to be happy in His presence, He wants us to come before him JOYFULLY, He wants us to ENJOY Him. [SMILE (:]
some times we lack the thirst for God because we enjoy other things more than being in His presence.
therefore -> discipine! practice! the more we do it, the more we'll learn to enjoy it!

even if you only have little or nothing, just come just as you are and bring all that you have before Him. He will not reject us. all we need to have is the desire for Him and Him and more of Him!

wine + milk= nutritional substances
wine represents God's spirit.

blessed are those who hunger and thirst for they will be filled.
if we hunger and thirst for Him, He will fill us =)

FOR WHEN GOD IS THE SUPREME DESIRE OF YOUR HEART, HE WILL BE SUPREME IN EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE.

He should be the most important one in our lives because He is the only one who can ever truly satisfy us (:

*we should not wait until we have a desperate need before we start desperately seeking God.
nope, it should be a continuous process =)

*if we start to think we don't need Him, then something is very wrong.

3 kinds of Christians:
1. half-measure christian
-half hearted

2. the one who walks that extra mile
-the one we should aspire to be!
-our hunger and thirst will cause us to be willing to walk that extra mile =)

3. seasonal christian
-sunday: "hey, i'm a christian. let's go to church!"
weekdays: "hmm. God? who?"

PEOPLE, we NEED your friends lists for 2nd Sep's YOUTHOPIA all right. its already a day overdue and our list has a GRAND TOTAL of ZERO friends.
yes. so please go and ASK your friends and do so with PASSION and ENTHUSIASM!
even if they're not confirmed coming, please at least submit their names so we can still pray for them and have an estimate of the number of people so as to facilitate the food part.

Main Scripture passage: Matthew 15: 21-28

5 Things that attract Christ/ 5 qualities that will bring Him into our lives:
1. spirit of repentance
-when Christ first appears in the Bible, He first goes to the ministry of John the Baptist who was preaching the message of repentance.
-repentance is like perfume to Him.
-a decision which we can all make.

2. Need
-Jesus met the needs of every single person who came to Him with a need. He healed all of them.
-But He did not touch the Pharisees and some of the rich.
-Christ is attracted to people who need Him and not people who put on an act, thinking that they do not need anything from Him and are hyprocritical.

3. Worship
-Jesus never stopped anyone from worshipping Him.
-He honours our worship.
-When He does not answer us, He is waiting for us to come before Him and worship and honour Him.

4. Humility
-v26. when Jesus says that particular statement to the woman, she does not get offended or angry or insulted. quite the contrary.
-great faith is not what we expect it to be. we think it is boldness, boasting about all the things God has used us to do. but none of those things impresses the Master. all that we are able to do and all that we have done is because of His mercy.
-only 2 people in the Bible were recognised by Jesus as having "great faith"- this woman, and the Centurian. both of them had the quality of humility.

5. faith.
-He is attracted to people who will not give up but will do all that is needed to come into His miraculous presence.

we're back to our usual youth meeting 2pm @ church tomorrow =)
